Meeting 12 February 2002

Oh dear! In my last account I mentioned that we were enjoying the greenest and most beautiful spring in New South Wales that any of us could remember. Apparently, it is as if these remarks had awakened and offended malign spirits that dwell deep inside this ancient continent. These imaginary spirits decided to show their disapproval. Once the green spring was replaced by golden summer then Sydney became ringed by bushfires. These bushfires were mostly lit by sick-minded arsonists whose work was facilitated by earlier obstructionist actions by the National Parks service. No sooner had the largely volunteer rural fire services extinguished the fires than the same malevolent spirits caused torrents of rain to flood many of the east coastal river valleys.

We met on Tuesday 12th February, as usual, in the RAC Club. Since our last meeting, we were pleased to have received a Christmas card from Mrs Holbrook. Mentally speaking, we were still in a torpid state because Australia has better things than work to think about in January - the New Year's Test Match at the Sydney Cricket Ground and fly-fishing on mayfly carpeted lakes in the Tasmanian highlands are but two of the distractions. Therefore, I have little to report of the proceedings other than to recommend to our UK friends Montrose Black Shiraz. I understand that some wine merchants there stock it.

The next 4 meetings are on Tuesday May 14th, August 20th, November 26th 2002 and February 18th 2003. Those of you with flexible travel plans please make a note, we would love to see you. Gap year students in Australia should not be deterred by the thought of an unsought expense; I am sure we can work something out.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 14 May 2002
