The Old Portmuthian Club

The Sydney Luncheon Table

Meeting 3 July 2001

We lunched on Tuesday 3rd July. Clarke, Gardiner, Cherry, Downer and Walker-Powell were joined by Phillip Griffiths, an old boy from Churcher's presently a sub-editor on The Australian Financial Review and one of Gardiner's friends. Unanimously, we coopted Griffiths to our group until such time as he discovered a sufficient number of his fellow old boys in Sydney to set up their own luncheon group.

Gardiner circulated a paper concerning OP fellow journalists. Respect for their sensibilities plus the possibility of an action does not allow them to be identified. One OP working for the Evening News felt demeaned at being ordered to attend the arrival of Santa Claus by helicopter at the Landport Drapery Bazaar. Instead, he composed his piece in his favourite pub and filed the copy on his way home. This may be a time-honoured tradition, but alas! Unknown to him the helicopter had been grounded and the event never happened. Griffiths thought he remembered the same OP working for a different paper reporting on a garden party. In similar circumstances he wrote two reports, for both a wet and a fine occasion. Unfortunately for him as a result of some sloppy sub-editing both reports appeared in different parts of the same issue.

Cherry announced that he was shortly to be off on his holidays, to the North Pole on an ice breaker no less. Walker-Powell announced that he had become a great-grandfather, but declined to accept any congratulations. Clarke, having read the recent article about Portsmouth in The Times, wondered what the point is of building a tower so that one could see France from its top. 'Who'd want to build a tower just to see the enemy'.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 16 October. We hope that Cameron Craig may be able to join us again. He sent us an email telling us that he was expecting to be back in the (Southern) spring.
