The Old Portmuthian Club

The Sydney Luncheon Table

Meeting 15 August 2000

Having read in the Old Portmuthian reports of dinners in various locations in the United Kingdom, we decided that we too should have a function. We do not have sufficient numbers to hold a dinner but we do for a luncheon. Accordingly, the first was held on August 15th in the dining room of the Royal Automobile Club of Australia. The location is splendid. The windows of one wall look out over Sydney Cove and the Harbour Bridge, the other over the Royal Botanic Gardens and beyond to the Pacific Ocean.

There were three OP's present: S. Gardiner (aag@aic.net.au 1950 to 1956), R. Cherry (ewcherry@ozemail.com.au 1945 to 1955) and A Walker-Powell (bandp@triode.net.au 1939 to 1950). We did not have an invited speaker; instead each spoke, usually simultaneously. Among the topics were: why should the senior school honour obscure clergymen for its house names and not real heroes of the calibre of Commander Holbrook VC, grumbling about the price of petrol, and about the good, the lazy, the mad and the bad among the staff 50 years ago. There could have been more subjects but, since it was past 5pm when we rose from the table, the minute taker's memory is somewhat defective. All that he clearly remembers is the excellent quality of the South Australian red wines.

Should there be any other OP's in Australia or if any are planning a trip to Australia please let one of us know. We intend to meet quarterly but, since luncheons are easier to arrange than club dinners, we can always lay one on at short notice especially if the OP is entertaining..
