Welcome to the Old Portmuthian Club. The OP Club's principal activity is facilitating contacts between former pupils of The Portsmouth Grammar School. The Club also publishes magazines and newsletters, organises social events in Portsmouth and elsewhere, and provides financial support to current and former pupils of PGS via the OP Charity.

The OP Club website has been designed in line with modern Internet technologies (XHTML, CSS, DOM) but your browser does not appear to properly support some of the required features.

So that you are not at a disadvantage, you will still see all of the information content but in a less organised form. However, you will have a better browsing experience if you upgrade to a modern browser.

January 2007 Newsletter

As usual, it gives me great pleasure to wish all members of the OP Club all the best for the New Year. I hope you enjoyed a great festive season and are now busy working off all the excesses of that time. This festive season started for some of us when we enjoyed a very successful Annual Dinner at the Grammar school. This was voted a most pleasant evening by all who attended. Now, looking forward rather than backward, some dates for your diaries for the new year.

23 February
The Club AGM. This meeting is followed by a most pleasant Buffet Supper. Please attend if you can and help to support those who run your Club. Any nominations for the Committee, especially ladies, would be welcomed most warmly

17 March
Whitcombe House Reunion. This is being organised by the Development Office to whom all queries should be directed via the School or the Hon.Sec.

9 June
Reunion for the Leavers of 1965-1970. Details as for the previous reunion

22 June
Provisional date for the Summer Sports fixtures, Cricket and Tennis matches, to be confirmed by the School.

24 September
School Prize Giving in the Cathedral

12 October
The Club Autumn Supper. With entertainment by the members of the School Music Department.

15th December
The Annual Dinner and Winter Sports fixtures with the School.

More details of all these events, except the AGM, will appear in later newsletters.

If you have any questions please email Roger Harris: beaston@kingscourt.org.uk.

Stop Press

Those of you who do not live close to Portsmouth may not yet have heard this important news item. The year 2008 will see a change in the Headmaster at Portsmouth Grammar School. We send our warmest congratulation to Tim Hands who will become Master of Magdalen College School after ten years of guiding the affairs of PGS. We will cover this important item in greater detail in the next edition of the Old Portmuthian.

Sadly we have to announce the deaths of two of the senior members of the Club. Peter Bath, who had become one of the leading lights amongst OPs in the Bournemouth area, died just before Christmas and Basil Willshire only a week or so ago. We hope to be able to publish obituaries for both in the next magazine.

A Plea from the Hon. Sec: - The number of letters returned by the GPO as "undeliverable" is on the increase despite the fact that we send fewer letters by this method these days. This is wasteful of both money and effort. Please make sure that if you change your address, either postal or e-mail, you let me know so that I can correct the database. Many thanks.

Roger Harris.
Hon. Sec.
