Notes re Annual Dinner
We plan to have a more relaxed and convivial seating arrangement for this year's Dinner. The considerably more spacious Dining Hall at the School will allow us to have individual tables of eight diners rather than the formal high table and sprigs. This, as well as creating a less formal atmosphere, should enable OPs to converse more easily with a greater number of friends than in the hitherto traditional arrangement.
OPs are asked, therefore, to stipulate, on making their reservation, the names of others with whom they would like to share a table. Why not indeed invite seven friends and make up a table? In the absence of specific requests, RHGW will, as ever, attempt to form groupings according to vintages. To ensure that OPs have as much time as possible to socialise during the evening, the duration of speeches will be somewhat reduced this year.
For those OPs who might require hotel accommodation in Portsmouth, I have researched four or five hotels in the vicinity of the School. The most attractive proposition would appear to be the Holiday Inn, Pembroke Road, Portsmouth, PO1 2TA (T: 0870 400 9065 or central reservations on 0800 40 50 60 or www.holiday-inn.co.uk). This is the best value at £50 per room including breakfast or £60 for two people sharing.
